John Gwynne is a highly regarded Manchester-based sports commentator. He is a former school teacher who gave up that profession after 20 years in the classroom to concentrate on a career in the media.
His darts commentaries during two decades, sitting alongside the late Sid Waddell, are legendary, while his contributions to Sky’s football coverage since 1997 have led to him being dubbed by host Jeff Stelling as ‘The Spirit of Soccer Saturday’.
Both codes of rugby, speedway, greyhound racing, bowls and cricket are other sports John has covered.
Indeed, he was the cricket correspondent for the BBC in the north west between 1988 and 2002, covering all Lancashire games, home and away, including seven Lord’s finals.
He is an accomplished, entertaining after-dinner speaker with stories from the classroom and the commentary box which, delivered by one of the most recognisable of voices, are bound to bring a smile to your face.
John is an ideal host, too. His efficiency, allied to his knowledge and cheeky sense of humour, make him the perfect man to ensure your event goes smoothly and happily.
He is proud to have hosted many big events, working with Sir Michael Parkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Garfield Sobers, Richie Benaud, Dennis Lillee, Freddie Flintoff, Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton and Nigel Benn, to name but few. At functions large or small, as a speaker or MC, John Gwynne gives real value for money.
